Are you struggling with audience size and engagement? It’s part of daily life when you’re building your business online. Sometimes the numbers just aren’t where you want them to be and it’s easy to become discouraged. It may be time to look at how you measure success.

As a Christian business owner, you have a secret weapon.

You don’t have to measure your success by the numbers that pop up on your screen. You’re called to something bigger than your business. Your market position is important because you have the opportunity to show the world what grace, love, and kindness look like.

You can’t measure that type of mission on a chart or graph.

To be really honest, you may never see the results of your ministry efforts. We only set things in motion, or perhaps someone else has set things in motion because they were obedient to God and we’re simply echoing words that were already said.

But don’t bury your head in the sand and ignore statistics, because the numbers can tell you a TON about the needs of your audience. Instead, look at the bigger picture. Keep those numbers connected to your calling and don’t freak out if they drop. Look at long term growth. Where were you this time last month, quarter, or year?

Don’t get hung up comparing today to yesterday–there are too many variables and you’ll just wear yourself out!

There are a million different variables, so don’t look at your Facebook page every day and say, “Oh my goodness. This page is 5% down today; what did we do wrong?” Most times, what you’re seeing is the ebb and flow of online traffic. I see this a lot over holidays or at the beginning of summer. A lot of people become upset as their page numbers drop by 10-20% during times when there are lots of events going on. It happens. When you look at your Insights and all the different analytics across your platforms, I would encourage you to back it out to at least a month or a quarter and look at the overall trends.

If you’re investing time as you should and listening to what God wants you to say, you’re going to continue to reach the right people.

If you’re feeling discouraged and small when you look at your numbers, go back a quarter or even a year ago. Did your ministry even exist a year ago? Maybe this is a brand new thing for you and being online IS the big success you should be celebrating! Take comfort in knowing you don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t have to have a page of 1,000,000 people to serve your God honorably.

Step into the niche God is calling you to and let Him decide how big you grow!
